Malika D Goes to Daycare highlights the relationship between parents, family members and a child's first educational experience in preschool. The picture book focuses on the support system provided when family comes together to make sure Malika D attends daycare. This dynamic is extremely common in the Black family structure, as well as other communities of color.
Malika D is finally of age to attend daycare, but she finds herself afraid to make new friends. After overcoming her fear, Malika D begins looking forward to returning to daycare after her weekend break.
It's true that it takes a village to educate children, but it begins at home with mom, dad, and extended family members' consistent support.
Through vivid and engaging illustrations, Malika D Goes to Daycare inspires young readers to learn about their emotions and how important family support, making new friends, and learning new concepts in preschool are as they begin their educational journey.
