The Quakers of Iowa - Paperback

by Louis Thomas Jones (Author)

On the prairie, belief became community. A quiet faith shaped Iowa. Louis Thomas Jones offers a vivid religious history book of the Quaker settlement in Iowa, following the Society of Friends as they moved west, across the region, organised meetings, and built midwestern Quaker communities amid the pressures of frontier life. Without straying into romance, the narrative keeps close to people and place: the habits of worship, the discipline of conscience, and the everyday choices that turned midwestern pioneer religion into durable institutions. Readers drawn to genealogy and local history will value the names, dates, and attention to township life in 19th century Iowa, while anyone exploring Midwest United States history will find an intimate view of how faith shaped education, reform, and neighbourly obligation. Jones writes with restraint, yet the stakes are real: migration, land, and the struggle to remain a people. Long regarded as a solid historical reference book within American church history, this study also speaks to wider seekers of Amish Mennonite Quaker history and the intertwined traditions of plain communities. Presented as a complete text reprint, it serves as Society of Friends Iowa memory made legible. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For casual readers, it is a clear window into Iowa's moral landscape; for classic-literature and history collectors, a cornerstone account of Friends in the American Midwest.
